‘Bloom to Blade’ with Rhys Harvey 2025

  • MATTILA STUDIO 44 Napoleon Street Battery Point, TAS, 7004 Australia (map)

Learn to make a knife, starting with smelting metal from ore.

In this 3-day workshop, Rhys Harvey will be taking us through the smelting of ores, basic bloomery furnace design, and selection of materials.

On the first day we smelt a ‘bloom’ of steel. Then we will begin forge welding this bloom together, refining the structure into a useable material to make blades from.

Next, Pete Mattila will lead us through the forge welding and refinement, and onto the construction of making a blade.

Once completed we will then make these into a specific style of knife, including heat-treating and handling.

Each participant walks way with a completed knife from this bloom making process.

Learn the process of smelting ore through to making a knife at this intensive 3-day blacksmithing course.
